A goal by Loyola University Maryland's Connor Thompson in the 78th minute proved to be the deciding tally as the fourth-seeded Iona College men's soccer team fell to the top-seeded Greyhounds 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2012 MAAC Championship.
After over an hour of scoreless play, Loyola was able to net the gamewinner when a free kick by Zack Tweddell resulted in a header by Jamie Libby. When the header was deflected, Thompson was able to put the ball in the net past Iona goalkeeper
Borja Barbero.
Loyola led in total shots 16-14, while Iona held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal led by senior
Alvaro Torrecilla's three SOG. Junior
Samuel Adjei and senior
Ansger Otto each put two shots on goal. Barbero made five saves for the Gaels, while Loyola goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper made nine saves.
