Iona MBB Cruises Past Norfolk State, 100-72

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team cruised to a 100-72 win over Norfolk State in non-conference action at the Hynes Center. Five Gaels (6-5) recorded double-digit scoring totals let by senior Lamont Jones' 24 points and sophomore David Laury's 20.

Jones shot 6-of-14 from the field but was 6-for-9 inside the arc and 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Jones posted five assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes.

Laury was 8-for-10 from the field and had seven rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Tavon Sledge had 12 points and eight boards while junior Sean Armand recorded 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Taaj Ridley was the fifth Gael in double figures with 10 points and a team-best nine boards off the bench.

Iona surrendered the first four points of the contest then scored five straight of its own to take the lead for good. A 7-0 run capped by a Jones' layup put the score at 14-6 with 14:25 to play in the first half. Norfolk State got within four points at 17-13 a little over two minutes later. The Gaels followed with six straight points to take their first double-digit advantage of the contest on a Laury layup at 10:36. Two Tre Bowman free throws with 7:28 to play pushed the Gael lead to 30-19 and the squad would lead by at least 10 points the rest of the way.

Iona led by as many as 31 points following a three-pointer by senior Nyandigisi Moikobu that got the Gaels to the century mark on the scoreboard in the final minute of play.

The Spartans' Pendarvis Williams scored 15 points with four three-point field goals in the loss. Zieyik Estime also hit four trifectas and had 12 points. Rashid Gaston added 13 off the bench.

The Gaels out shot Norfolk State 50.7%-42.6% and held a 47-21 advantage on the boards. Iona's 24 assists was a season best. The Maroon & Gold scored 100 or more points for the seventh time in two-plus seasons under head coach Tim Cluess improving to 7-0.

Following the Christmas holiday the Gaels head back to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's on Friday (Dec. 28) for a 7:00 pm tilt.
