NEWARK, NJ - For the second consecutive game, the Iona College women's soccer team scored a late goal to send the game into overtime, but neither team scored as the Gaels tied NJIT 1-1 on Sunday evening in non-conference play at Lubetkin Field.
Junior
Sofia Sanchez scored her second goal of the season in the 88th minute off a direct kick from senior
Leah Taylor to tie the game for the Visitors.
The tally was Sanchez's second in consecutive games, as the Gaels for the third time in a row scored in the final five minutes of regulation to either send a game into overtime or walk away with a win.
Neither sides scored in the opening half, but the Gaels owned a 6-1 advantage in shots, which helped propel them to 13-9 overall edge for the contest. Both Iona and NJIT took six shots each in the second half. The Highlanders led the overtime periods 2-1 in shots.
NJIT quickly scored in the second half as Erin Morris tapped in a goal from Alex Adam and Gechi Ukaegbu in the 50th minute.
Junior
Trista Rivera made two saves in the 110 minutes of play; while Samantha Bersett made six in the draw.
The Maroon & Gold's only overtime opportunity came in the first period on a shot from junior
Christina Tesoriero.
Iona will remain on the road for three more games before heading back to New Rochelle for MAAC Play. The Gaels will also conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule on Thursday when they meet Hartford at 7 p.m.
