Grigull Sets New 1,000-Free Record Despite Loss

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Despite a new Iona record in the 1,000-free, the Iona College men's swimming and diving team fell to local MAAC rival Manhattan 125-155 on Monday evening at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool.

The record was broken by junior Justin Grigull, as he snapped Ace Blair's 1991 mark of 9:45.44, by clocking in at 9:39.68 and placing first for the team. Grigull also won the 50-free in 21.92 and the 100-free in 47.30.

Senior Chris Yacobacci won the 100-breasktoke in 58.09 and the 200-breast in 2:07.81. In the 200-IM, Yacobacci hit the pads in 1:59.65 for his third individual win.

Senior Joseph De Leone placed second in the 200-free at 1:48.15 and freshman Scott Martin finished third. Martin added a win in the 200-fly at 2:02.35.

The Gaels will now rest and prepare for the MAAC Championships in Buffalo, NY from Feb.14 until Feb. 16.
