NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior midfielder Sofia Sanchez's goal from 15 yards out in the 94th minute pushed the Iona College women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Siena Saturday afternoon in the team's home finale at Mazzella Field.
It was fitting for Sanchez to score the game winning tally, as she was one of nine seniors on the pitch for their final game at Mazzella Field. Prior to the game, the Gaels honored Sanchez, along with midfielder Leanne Benson, midfielder Chelsea Cabarcas, goalkeeper Jacquelyn Gates, forward Carly Haden, defender Katie Higgins, forward Nicole Paulucci, goalkeeper Trista Rivera and midfeielder Christina Tesoriero.
Taking a feed from freshman Erika Flowers, Sanchez connected on a one timer past Siena goalkeeper Taylor Booth to the left side of the net for her first tally of the season.
The win moves Iona to 4-2-2 in MAAC, 5-7-4 overall on the season. Siena drops to 4-3-1 in MAAC play and 8-7-1 overall.
Siena held an 13-6 advantage in shots in the contest, including an 8-2 edge in the second period.
Rivera and Gates split time between the pipes, with Rivera making three saves over the first half and overtime periods. Gates made five saves in the second half. Booth made two saves for the Saints.
The Gaels are back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Marist for a 7:00 pm matchup with the Red Foxes.
