NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Junior midfielder Ignacio Maganto's strike from 10 yards out in the 91st minute ignited the Iona College men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
The goal marked Maganto's conference leading ninth tally of the season, third in the last two games, and seventh in his last five contests.
The Gaels had opportunities throughout the match, outshooting the Purple Eagles 18-7 in regulation. But less than one minute into the extra frame, freshman midfielder Oscar Gonzalez found Maganto on the left side, and the junior finished the play for his fourth game winner of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Julian Petrello made three stops for his fourth shutout of the season. Niagara goalkeeper Brenden Ottman made eight saves for the Purple Eagles.
Iona continues MAAC action Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Saint Peter's. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm.
