NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Following a regulation in which neither side could find the net, senior Nicole Paulucci's header off a free kick by classmate Leanne Benson in the 91st minute propelled the Iona College women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
The win moved Iona to 4-5-3 overall on the season, and 3-0-1 in MAAC play. Quinnipiac fell to 2-5-3, 2-1-2 in the MAAC with the loss.
The Gaels and Bobcats traded opportunities over the first two halves, as both squads recorded five shots apiece, with Iona holding a 5-3 edge on attempts on goal.
But less than one minute into the overtime period, sophomore Alex Chinich was able to force a Quinnipiac foul. With the free kick opportunity, Benson lined up and found Paulucci who found the net with her second career game winner, her third tally of the season.
Senior netminder Trista Rivera grabbed three saves for her second consecutive shutout, and third of the season. Natalia Grodzki had four saves for the Bobcats.
Iona wraps up its current three game homestand Wednesday, when it welcomes Monmouth to Mazzella Field for a 3:00 pm start.
