WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - A goal by Monmouth's Dave Nigro in the 79th minute decided the outcome as the Iona College men's soccer team fell to the Hawks 1-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening at The Great Lawn.
With just over ten minutes remaining in regulation, the home squad found the net for the game winner. Following a save by Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello, Monmouth's Joseph Schmid gathered the loose ball and found Nigro, who connected from 15 yards out inside the right post for his third goal of the season.
Overall the Gaels were outshot 14-7 in the contest, including a 6-1 margin in attempts on goal. Freshman Vincent Harrington recorded a team high two shots from the Maroon & Gold.
Petrello recorded five saves for Iona, while Monmouth's Eric Klenofksy made one stop.
Iona is back in action Saturday at Mazzella Field, when the squads faces off with Rider in it's conference home opener.
