FAIRFIELD, CT - The third seeded Iona College men's soccer team played second-seeded Quinnipiac to a 1-1 tie over 110 minutes of play before falling to the Bearcats 7-6 in a shootout in the semifinals of the 2013 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship Friday evening at Lessy Field.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on a goal by Brandon Strain-Goode off an assist from Ola Ogunjobi.
The Gaels would find the equalizer over 60 minutes later when freshman Jordan Scarlett headed in a throw in from classmate Jonathan Proctor in the 86th minute for his second tally of the season.
Iona would have several chances in the waning moments of the second half, and into the overtime period, but could not pick up the game winner.
In the penalty kicks session, the Gaels had a chance to pick up the win following a save by redshirt freshman Julian Petrello. The Iona attempt went high and the score remained tied at six apiece. Following a Quinnipiac goal to pull ahead 7-6, the Gaels missed a second attempt as the Bearcats moved on to the championship game.
Iona finishes the 2013 campaign with an overall record of 10-6-3, their fourth double digit win total in the last six seasons.
