Iona WBB Races To 74-59 Victory Over Wagner

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team shot an even 50.0% from the field and rolled to a 74-59 victory over Wagner Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels led for all but 31 seconds in the win.

Sophomore forward Joy Adams sparked the Iona offense with a career high 24 points on 12-for-16 shooting. Adams pulled down 13 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double and added three assists, three steals and one blocks in the game. Sophomore guard Aaliyah Robinson was inserted into the starting lineup and responded with a career high 17 points and four rebounds.

Junior guard Aleesha Powell knocked down a career high five three-pointers for 15 points to go along with four assists. Senior guard Haley D'Angelo had a team high six assists and senior center Sabrina Jeridore had a game high seven blocks.

A layup by Adams with 15:26 remaining gave Iona a 14-7 lead early in the first half. Wagner would respond with a 10-2 run, taking a 17-16 lead on a layup by Jasmine Nwajei.

With the score tied at 19 with 10:08 left in the first, the Maroon & Gold went on a 19-4 run over the next 6:42 minutes of game action, taking a 38-23 advantage on a layup by Robinson with 3:26 remaining in the frame.

The Gaels would be held scoreless for the duration of the half, but kept Wagner to just three points and took a 38-26 cushion into the intermission.

In the second half, Iona opened the stanza with an 11-2 run, grabbing its biggest lead of the game, 49-28, on a three-pointer by Robinson with 14:41 on the clock.

Iona would keep the double digit margin for the remainder of the contest, with Wagner only getting within 12 in the second half. Overall in the contest, the Gaels held the Seahawks to 35.0% shooting from the field.

Jordyn Peck paced Wagner with a team high 24 points. Nwajei had 10 points and six assists for the Seahawks.

Iona is back in action Tuesday, Dec. 3 when it visits Sacred Heart for a 7:00 pm tip.
