Men's Soccer Tops Manhattan 2-0 In Home Finale

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 2-0 shutout victory over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

Prior to the game, the Gaels honored Alexander Abdalla, Samuel Adjei, Charlie Butte, Franklin Castellanos, Michael Hodgen, Tommy Martin, MJ Nestor, Mike Stabile, Paul Traut for their contributions to the program.

The Jaspers controlled the offensive tempo early, attempting five shots in the first 20 minutes while the Gaels were unable to get a chance off.  Iona would eventually be able to get five shots off in the first half, but neither squad could find the net as the game remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

Iona would get on the board early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Adjei sent a cross from the left side that Castellanos one touch into the left corner to give Iona a 1-0 lead.

The Gaels added another score in the 57th minute when Martin connected on a header off a pass from Adjei that beat Manhattan goalkeeper Alex Coates McDowall to the back post.

Overall, the Japsers held a 19-14 edge in shots, while the Gaels outshot Manhattan 7-6 in shots on goal. Reshirt freshman Julian Petrello made six saves to pick up his sixth shutout of the season. Coates McDowall made five saves for Manhattan.

The Gaels complete the regular season with a 9-6-2 overall record, 7-2-1 in conference, and await their seed in the 2013 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship, set for Nov. 15-17 at Fairfield University.
