WSOC Plays To 1-1 Tie With Hartford In Home Opener

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Hartford in double overtime Thursday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

The Hawks opened the contest in the 25th minute on an unassisted goal by Arielle Aikens after crossing over an Iona defender and putting a shot to the low left corner.

Hartford outshot Iona 6-2 in the opening frame, as both sides kept the ball around midfield for the majority of the frame.

Senior Nicole Paulucci scored Iona's first tally of the season off a crisp pass from freshman Erika Flowers in the 59th minute. The marker snapped a 239-minute scoreless drought to begin the season for the Gaels.

Iona had an opportunity to end the game in the final minute, as a chip was sent towards the goal that went just high.  The Hawks once again held an advantage in shots in the second half, outshooting the Gaels 4-1.

In the opening overtime period, neither team found the back of the net, but the Gaels had an opportunity with less than 10 seconds remaining after a yellow card was issued and a free kick was awarded from 30 yards away.

Senior Trista Rivera made seven saves in the contest and Hartford's Alison Koerkenmei made just one. Hartford finished with a 13-5 edge in shots.

Iona will remain at home and host Binghamton Sunday at 1:00 pm.
