WSOC Falls In Overtime to Binghamton 1-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 deficit to Binghamton in overtime, as the Bearcats needed just three minutes of extra time to come away with the golden goal at Mazzella Field on Sunday.

Binghamton (2-1) struck in the 93rd minute of the contest when Stephani Church had a shot deflected by an Iona defender into the low left corner of the goal.

Iona senior netminder Trista Rivera was in proper position to make the save, but after the ball caromed off the Iona player, it trickled in the opposite direction towards the open cage.

Both sides had limited chances on goal throughout the contest, but the visitors finished with a 14-9 edge in shots. Carrie Martin made five saves for the Bearcats in the win.

Rivera was asked to make a key set of saves in the 77th minute after a through ball came inside the box, forcing the Iona keeper to make a pair of saves.

Freshman Erika Flowers gave Iona a chance early in the second half, but her shot was blanked by Martin. On the other end, the Iona defense blocked two shots in the first ten minutes of the game, as Binghamton tried to force the Gaels deep inside the box.

Iona (0-3-1) will remain at home to complete their first of two three-game homestand this seasons when they welcome Albany to Mazzella Field next Friday at 3 pm.
