Men's Soccer Falls To Columbia On The Road, 2-1

NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Columbia Saturday afternoon at Columbia Soccer Stadium.

The Gaels found themselves in an early hole when the Lions found the net in the 13th minute. Columbia's David Najem was able to put in the rebound off a shot from Andrew Tinari past Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello to put the home team ahead 1-0.

Iona would tie the game at one in the 17th minute when senior Franklin Castellanos put away a penalty kick in the top left corner for his third goal of the season.

The game would remain tied for the remainder of the first half and into the second stanza.

Columbia would then net the game winner in the 62nd minute. From 18 yards out, Antonio Matarazzo would fire a shot into the Iona defense. His intial attempt was blocked but his second opportunity found its way into the net for the deciding tally.

Overall, Iona was outshot by the Lions 14-7. Petrello made three saves for Iona, while his Columbia counterpart Kyle Jackson made four stops.

The Maroon & Gold will now take a week off before taking on Hartwick next Saturday on the road beginning at 3:00 pm.
