RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team continued the early portion of its 2013 conference slate playing to a 1-1 tie with Manhattan College Wednesday evening at Gaelic Park.
After the game was scoreless for the first 78 minutes of play, the Gaels (2-5-3, 1-0-1 MAAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Melissa Frederick in the 79 minute. In a scramble in front of the net, Frederick was able to find the net from five yards for her first tally of the season.
With the Gaels closing in on their second straight win, Manhattan (3-6-1, 0-1-1 MAAC) evened the score in the 85th minute. Taking a pass from Tara Teal, Erica Modena picked up her fourth goal of the season for the Jaspers, connecting from 15 yards out into the upper right corner of the Iona net.
The two squads would continue on for a scoreless 25 minutes of play, with Manhattan getting a 3-1 edge in shots in the extra frame. Overall, the Jaspers held an 18-10 advantage in shots.
Senior Trista Rivera made seven saves in net for the Gaels, while Manhattan's Kristen Skonieczny had three stops.
Iona is idle until next Wednesday, Oct. 2, when it welcomes Saint Peter's to Mazzella Field for a 3:00 pm start.
