NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool Friday afternoon in nonconference action to take on rival Fordham University. The Gaels were outscored by the Rams 136-88.
The Gaels placed third in the 400 medley relay, finishing with a time of 3:41.08. The squad was lead by seniors Ryan Bacci and Tyler Elfert, and freshmen Keegan Boisson-Yates and Matthew Rothman.
The 1000 freestyle saw sophomore Scott Martin touch third, finishing with a time of 10:23.86. Martin also placed third in the 200 yard butterfly, completing the event in 2:03.22.
Freshman Collin Purrman picked up the Gaels' only solo first place victory, finishing ahead of the pack in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.82.
In the 200 freestyle, senior Justin Grigull placed second with a time of 1:48.23. Senior Lee Stiles placed third in the event, touching with a time of 1:52.69.
For the Gaels, Rothman touched second in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 50.90. The 500 freestyle saw Grigull place first with a time of 4:48.89, while Purrman finished second with a time of 4:50.74.
Iona swept the 200 breastroke event. Senior Nick Kotonias touched first with a time of 2:24.50. Freshman Joseph Shields placed second with a time of 2:26.41, and freshman Brendan Chan completed the event with a time of 2:41.28.
The final event of the evening saw the Gaels sweep the 400 freestyle relay. Placing first with a time of 3:13.84 was the squad of Elfert, Boisson-Yates, Purrman and Grigull. The tandem of Stiles, Martin, sophomore Tommy Keefe, and freshman Bryan Veals placed second with a time of 3:23.41. Senior Mark Wallace, freshman Jay Lessard, senior Denis O'Connor, and junior Connor Reid finished third with a time of 3:36.84.
The Gaels next return to action at Saint Peter's on January 25.
