JERSEY CITY, NJ - The men's swimming and diving team returned to MAAC action Friday afternoon at Saint Peter's. The Gaels swam well but were outscored by the Peacocks 155-121.
The afternoon opened up with the Gaels securing second and third place finishes in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of seniors Ryan Bacci, Tyler Elfert, Justin Grigull, and freshman Keegan Boisson-Yates placed second with a time of 1:42.10. The squad of freshman Matthew Rothman, sophomore Daniel McGovern, and seniors Nick Kotonias and Mark Wallace touched third with a time of 1:47.39.
Grigull placed first in the 100 freestyle, coming in with a time of 49.15. He also placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.47. Boisson-Yates placed second in the 100 backstroke (53.44) and the 200 backstroke (2:04.29)
The 1000 freestyle saw freshman Collin Purrman touch second with a time of 10:16.15. Sophomore Scott Martin trailed behind finishing in third with a time of 10:25.91.
The Gaels placed second and third in breastroke events. In the 200 breaststroke, Kotonias touched second with a time of 2:24.62. Bacci placed third in the 100 breastroke, finishing with a time of 1:05.03.
Wallace placed third in the 100 backstroke, completing the event with a time of 56.68.
In the 200 freestyle, Elfert touched outswam the competition with a first place finish, touching with a time of 1:50.79. Freshman Bryan Veals placed third in the event with a time of an even 2:00.00. The 500 freestyle saw Purrman place third with a time of 4:58.43.
The Butterfly events saw the Gaels post third place finishes. Martin touched in the 200 yard butterfly with at ime of 2:03.60. Elfert completed the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.98.
The Gaels took the top three spots in the 200 IM. Boisson-Yates finished first with a time of 2:07.75. Trailing behind were sophomore Brandon Hadhazy (2:08.08) and Kotonias (2:09.69).
The Gaels ended the night on a high note as they secured first and third place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Elfert, Grigull, freshman Matt Rothman, and sophomore Tommy Keefe touched first with a time of 1:29.97. The team of Bacci, Purrman, Martin, and senior Lee Stiles placed third, coming in with a time of 1:31.35.
The next challenge for the Gaels comes next Saturday as the Gaels compete against MAAC rival Fairfield. The contest is scheduled for 11:00 am.
