JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College women's soccer team picked up its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season with a dominant 7-1 win over Saint Peter's Wednesday afternoon. The seven goals are the most in a game by the Gaels since a 7-0 victory over NJIT in Sept. 2006.
"This was a great team win," said head coach Linda Hathorn. "We dealt with some difficult circumstances but pulled together to put in a solid performance. I am really proud of the team."
Sophomore Erika Flowers and freshman Julia Campagna each tallied five points in the contest on two goals and one assist apiece. Senior Safi Ayinde had a goal and assist, while senior Melissa Frederick and freshman Christine Rebus scored the other Iona tallies.
Flowers got Iona on the board with a 2nd minute goal off a feed from Campagna. In the sixth minute, the Peacocks evened the contest on a goal by Kaitlyn Lima.
The Gaels took the lead for good on Ayinde's 8th minute goal off an assist from freshman Charlotte Stuart. Frederick put Iona ahead 3-1 when she found the net in the 26th minute.
The Maroon & Gold scored its final two goals of the first half in the span of 80 seconds. In the 38th minute, Campagna scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Flowers. Just over a minute later, Flowers scored her sixth goal of the season to push Iona to a 5-1 lead.
The Gaels registered their final goals in the 73rd and 88th minutes. Campagna netted her second of the game on an unassisted goal before Rebus collected her first career tally off a feed from Stuart to give Iona the six goal margin of victory.
Iona held a 22-4 advantage in shot in the contest, and 6-1 cushion in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Morgan McBrier made one save for Iona to claim her third win of the year. Saint Peter's goalkeepers Lauren Solene and Molly O'Halloran combined to make nine stops.
The Gaels are back in action Saturday when they host Niagara at 12:00 pm.
