LEWISTON, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team fell to Niagara University 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field. The Gaels are now 7-5-2 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The Gaels got on the board quickly, scoring in the third minute when freshman Luis Mendoza netted a goal off an assist from sophomore Alex Ramos. Iona took a two goal lead in the 31st minute, when sophomore Oscar Gonzalez converted a penalty kick attempt.
Trailing 2-0, the Purple Eagles evened the score with two goals in the second half, both off the foot of Nicholas Watson. Watson scored in the 51st minute before evening the contest in the 68th minute.
Watson then completed his hat trick when he netted the game-winner in the 99th minute. Iona was outshot in the contest 18-15, but held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made six saves in net for Iona, while Steve Casey registered three saves for the Purple Eagles.
The Gaels are back in action Wednesday (Oct. 22) when they host Monmouth at 3:00 pm.
