Women's Soccer Stopped By Rider At Home, 2-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Rider University Saturday afternoon in a rain soaked matchup at Mazzella Field. The Gaels are now 5-7-1 overall on the year, and 1-2-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition.

Battling the elements, and each other, the two teams combined for 32 fouls in the contest. Iona was credited with 11 shots in the game, including eight in the second period.  Freshman midfielder Christine Rebus and senior forward Safi Ayinde each attempted a team-high three shots in the game.

In the 42nd minute, the Broncs tallied the game-winner. On the second of back-to-back corner kicks, Priscillia Santos' header off the feed from Maddie Lipton found the net to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead. Rider then added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when Michelle Iacono scored her third goal of the year.

Graduate student Lauren Ferris played the first half in net for the Gaels, and recorded five saves. Freshman Morgan McBrier made four saves in the the second half. Bethany-May Howard made five saves for the Broncs.

Iona is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 8 when it hosts Marist at Mazzella Field for a 3:00 pm start.
