Women's Soccer Plays Marist To 1-1 Draw

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team played Marist College to a 1-1 draw Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels now stand at 1-2-2 in league play.

After a nearly scoreless first two periods, the teams netted the game's two goals in the final three minutes of regulation. In the 88th minute, Iona took a 1-0 lead on sophomore forward Erika Flowers' fifth goal of the season. Off a lead pass from freshman forward Charlotte Stuart, Flowers connected on an attempt to the left of the net for her sixth career tally.

Less than two minutes later, on a scrum in front of the net, Marist's Marissa Mertens chipped a shot over the sprawled out Iona defense for her second goal of the season with 54 seconds remaining.

The Gaels held a 4-3 advantage in shots during overtime, but both teams had opportunities to net the game-winner.  Marist's Marjana Maksuti attempted a shot from just inside the box in the 104th minute that was stopped by a sliding save from Iona defender Kim Marra.

In the final seconds of play, the Gaels had a golden chance when sophomore defender Emily Hansen fed a cross in front of the net towards senior forward Melissa Frederick. Frederick's dramatic last-ditch header hit the crossbar just as the clock ran out in the contest.

Iona goalkeeper Morgan McBrier made six saves, while her Marist counterpart, Andrea Wicks, made nine stops.  Iona resumes MAAC competition Saturday afternoon when it travels to Canisius for a 1:00 pm start.
