BROOKLYN, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team fell to No. 20 Saint Francis Brooklyn 17-7 Wednesday evening in CWPA Northern Division action. The Gaels are now 2-4 in league play, and 2-12 on the year overall.
The Terriers held a 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes, but could have been ahead by more if not for four saves by Iona starting netminder Mike Pufunt. St. Francis Brooklyn got the offense in sync in the second quarter, outscoring the Gaels 7-2 to take a 9-3 lead at halftime.
The Terriers extended their lead to seven with two more goals in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Gaels got to within six, 11-5, before a 3-0 run by Saint Francis Brooklyn pushed the Iona deficit to nine with just over three minutes remaining.
Senior Jake Lloyd led the Gaels with three goals, while junior Zach Presto found the net twice. Seniors James Ramaley and Ian Thompson tallied the final Iona goals.
The Gaels are back in action Tuesday (Oct. 21) when they travel to Fordham for a 7:30 pm start.
