BOSTON, MA - The Iona College men's soccer team opened the 2014 regular season with a 1-1 draw of Boston College Friday afternoon at Boston University's Nickerson Field.
"Today's game was well played," said head coach Fernando Barboto. "Boston College is a good team and we're pleased with the result to open the year."
Iona recorded six shots in the contest, while Boston College registered 22 attempts, including eight on target. The Eagles struck first in the 72nd minute when Zeiko Lewis connected on a free kick from 20 yards away.
The game was evened in the 79th minute. Senior forward Ignacio Maganto fired a cross into the Boston College box, with the ball finding the net when it deflected off an Eagles defender attempting to clear it.
The two squads would go through the extra frames without a game-winner, as the Eagles held a 5-1 advantage in shots in overtime. Sophomore Julian Petrello made two of his seven saves in the extra 30 minutes.
"Both goalies played well and made stops at crucial times," said Barboto.
Boston College held a 12-3 cushion in corner kicks, while Alex Kapp recorded two saves for the Eagles.
The Gaels complete their opening weekend back at Nickerson, when they take on Boston University at 8:00 pm Sunday evening.
