Men's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Draw At Connecticut

STORRS, CT - The Iona College men's soccer team continued non-conference action with a 1-1 draw of Connecticut Friday evening at Morrone Stadium. The Gaels' early season record now stands at 2-3-2, while UConn is also 2-3-2 on the year.

"I think we played very well, possessed the ball well, and set up chances to score," said head coach Fernando Barboto. ""Anytime you can tie on the road with a team the caliber of Connecticut it's something positive."

After a scoreless first half, the Gaels took a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Taking a feed from freshman back Tyler Pinho, senior midfielder Ignacio Maganto scored his team best fourth goal in the 51st minute.

The Huskies evened the score in the 78th minute when Nicholas Zuniga scored his first goal of the year.  The two teams then traded chances in the overtime period, but neither squad could net the game-winner.

Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello made five saves, including a stop of a strike by UConn's Clye Larin in the final minute of play. Jacob Wagemeister made seven saves for the Huskies.

The Huskies held a 19-16 advantage in shots, while UConn had nine corner kicks to the Gaels' three. Iona is back in action Saturday, Sept. 27 when it welcomes Columbia to Mazzella Field for the team's home opener.
