HAMDEN, CT - The Iona College women's soccer team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action with a 1-1 draw of Quinnipiac University Wednesday afternoon at QU Soccer Field. Trailing 1-0, freshman forward Charlotte Stuart tallied the game-tying goal for the Gaels in the 55th minute.
The draw moved Iona's overall season record to 4-5-1 on the year. The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute, when Amanda Barroca registered her first goal of the season. Barroca scored when she connected on a rebound in front of the net.
Stuart tied the game in the second half when she stole the ball from the Quinnipiac defense and scored on the breakaway chance. In the overtime period both teams connected on five shots, but could find the game-winner.
Freshman goalkeeper Morgan McBrier made six saves for the Gaels, while Quinnipiac netminder Natalia Grodzki recorded seven stops.
Iona held a 22-19 shot advantage in the contest, and a 9-3 cushion in corner kicks. The Maroon & Gold resumes MAAC play on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Siena.
