Men's Soccer Falls At Delaware, 6-2

NEWARK, DE - The Iona College men's soccer team could not keep up with the offensive attack of Delaware and fell to the Blue Hens 6-2 Thursday evening at Grant Stadium.

"We had a bad day at the office," said head coach Fernando Barboto.  "We didn't defend well and they took advantage of our mistakes."

Delaware tallied a goal in the third minute of play, and pushed the lead to 4-0 before Iona cracked the scoreboard in the 37th minute.

Senior forward Ignacio Maganto scored his first goal of the season off a feed from freshman forward Marcos Nunez. Maganto took a pass from Nunez and knocked it in through the left side for his 17th career goal.

Delaware regained a four goal margin with a 55th minute tally, before the Maroon & Gold answered less than a minute later.  Sophomore midfielder Jon-Luke Ferrandino scored his first goal for the Gaels in the 56th minute. Taking a feed from sophomore forward Teddy Forson, Ferrandino connected to the left side from 15 yards out past Blue Hens keeper Paul DeFeo.

Delaware scored its final goal of the contest in the 64th minute. The Blue Hens outshot the Gaels 19-8 in the game, and held a 6-1 edge in corners.

"We are a young team particularly on the back end," said Barboto.  "We can use this game as a learning experience and find the areas we need to work on going forward."

Iona sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made six saves in 72-plus minutes in net for the Gaels. Freshman Jacobo Aparicio recorded two stops in his first collegiate action. DeFeo registered three stops for Delaware.

The Gaels continue non-conference action Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Yale. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
