ALBANY, NY - Sophomore forward Erika Flowers scored twice to lead the Iona College women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over UAlbany Friday evening at Bob Ford Field.
"It was an interesting game to say the least," said head coach Linda Hathorn. "We jumped out to an early lead in the first, and added two quick ones in the second. But we took our foot off the gas and let Albany back into it, making for a crazy final 25 minutes."
Freshman forward Julia Campagna also tallied a multi-point game, recording three points on a goal and an assist. Campagna scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute. Taking a feed from senior midfielder Gabriella Fuduli, Campagna connected from ten yards out for her first collegiate goal.
Frederick pushed Iona ahead 2-0 38 seconds later on her first of the day. From inside the goal box, Frederick scored from 15 yards away inside the right post.
Shortly into the second half, Flowers pushed the Gaels ahead 3-0 in the 49th minute. Taking a feed from freshman midfielder Christine Rebus, Campagna took the ball down the right side and fed Flowers for her second goal of the year.
Flowers scored Iona's final goal in the 54th minute, when she put in a rebound off a corner kick for her first career multi-goal game. Vivian Vega scored twice in the 59th and 63rd minutes to trim the deficit for the Great Danes, but it would be as close as they could get to the Gaels.
Graduate goalkeeper Lauren Ferris made three saves for the Gaels, while Alan Brennan made two stops for the Great Danes. Iona was outshot in the contest 15-12, with UAlbany holding an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Iona is back in action Sunday at Mazzella Field, when it hosts Bryant for a 1:00 pm start.
