Iona MBB Pulls Away From Fairfield In Second Half, 74-58

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team used a 22-6 run over the final 11:15 of the contest to earn a 74-58 win over Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. Junior A.J. English scored 10 of his game-high 24 points during the decisive stretch and dished out 10 assists for his third double-double of the season to lead the Gaels.

During the run, Iona shot 7-for-13 from the field, 4-for-6 from beyond the arc with just one turnover until their final possession. By contrast, the Stags were 1-for-12 with four turnovers down the stretch. Over the first 29 minutes of the contest Fairfield shot 52.4% from the field with seven giveaways. The visitors led by as many as nine points at the 7:39 mark of the first half.

Senior David Laury added 19 points and rookie Schadrac Casimir had 10 points and five rebounds in the win. Sophomore Ryden Hynes had a season-best nine points with the help of two three pointers while adding six rebounds. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Isaiah Williams recorded eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block. He was 3-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.

The Stags were led by junior Mike Kirkland's 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Rookie Tyler Nelson scored 15 points, all from beyond the arc.

For the game, Iona shot 56.5% from the field and 63.2% (12-for-19) from beyond the arc. Fairfield held a 42.6% shooting percentage and just 28.6% (6-for-21) from deep. The Gaels out rebounded the Stags 30-26 and held a 17-14 assist advantage. It was the slowest tempo contest of the season for the Maroon & Gold with just 59 estimated possessions. Iona's offensive efficiency was above its season average of 1.25 points per possession, while holding the Stags to a 0.983 PPP.

The win was the 14th straight at the Hynes Center following its last loss to Canisius on Jan. 17, 2014. The Gaels improved to 36-4 in MAAC play in New Rochelle and 5-1 overall in the MAAC in 2014-15 pulling even with Monmouth a top the league standings.

Iona embarks on its longest stint of the season away from the Hynes Center three games on the road before completing the stretch at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 25. The Gaels travel to Western New York this weekend for games at Niagara (Jan. 16) and Canisius (Jan. 18). They follow with a game at Rider (Jan. 18) before taking on the Purple Eagles for the second time in nine days at the "World's Most Famous Arena".
