Women's Basketball Falls To Marist, 63-58

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team fell to 11-10 on the season, and 8-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, with a 63-58 setback to Marist Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center.

In a contest that included nine ties and 11 lead changes, the Red Foxes use a 13-7 run over the final 6:16 to pick up the victory in a matchup of the two teams that shared last season's MAAC Regular Season Championship.

Junior forward Joy Adams led the Gaels with 23 points and 24 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end. The 24 rebounds were two shy of her career high, which is also a single-game Iona and MAAC record.

Senior guard Damika Martinez scored 19 points, pushing her career total to 2,388 points. She now sits 85th all-time on the Division I scoring ledger and 80 points shy of the MAAC scoring record.

The Gaels led by as many as eight in the first half, as a three-pointer by Martinez with 16:31 remaining gave Iona an 11-3 lead.  Marist battled back, and with the score knotted at 30, took a 32-30 lead into intermission after a pair of Brittni Lai free throws with five seconds remaining.

With the Maroon & Gold trailing 47-44, the Gaels scored seven of the next ten points, as junior guard Aaliyah Robinson's free throw gave Iona a 51-50 cushion with 6:33 remaining. Marist scored the next ten points to grab a nine-point lead, 60-51, with 1:59 left.

Senior Tori Jarosz scored a team-high 20 points for the Red Foxes, while junior Madeline Blais scored 13 points, including 11 of the team's final 13 points.

Iona is back in action Thursday, Feb. 5 when it welcomes Manhattan to the Hynes Center for a 10:00 am start.
