Akron's Second Half Surge Leads To Win Over Iona MBB

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Iona College men's basketball team dropped its third straight contest in a 78-64 decision to Akron in non-conference action at the South Point Holiday Classic. Junior Jordan Washington led the Gaels with 21 points off the bench and was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance in the Gaels two contests in Las Vegas.

Washington shot 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-10 from the free throw line adding five rebounds to match the team high. Rookie Jahaad Proctor posted 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting with three three-point field goals. Senior Isaiah Williams posted seven points and five rebounds while sophomore Deyshonee Much posted seven points and three boards.

The Gaels trailed by as many as nine points in the first half following an Akron three-pointer with 5:27 remaining. Down eight with 2:48 to play, the Gaels scored nine straight points to go ahead 39-38 with 25 seconds left in the half. A conventional three-point play by the Zips made it a 41-39 contest at the break.

Akron began the second half on a 15-4 run over the first 5:27 to stretch a 56-43 lead. Iona cut it to eight points with 7:51 left and neither team could find a bucket over the next 2:15. The Zips scored nine straight points to take a 76-59 lead with 3:39 remaining, their largest advantage of the contest.

Six Akron players recorded double figures led by 16 points by Reggie McAdams and a 15-point, 10-rebound effort by tournament MVP Isaiah Johnson.

Following the Christmas break, Iona wraps up its 2015-16 non-conference slate when it host Drexel on Monday (Dec. 28) at 7:00 pm at the Hynes Center.
