Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Iona College women's basketball senior guard Damika Martinez became the all-time leading scorer in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history in a 59-54 loss to Marist Friday evening at the McCann Center.
Entering the game just two points shy of the all-time mark, Martinez quickly established the new bench mark with a three with 18:08 remaining in the first half, that gave the Gaels a 5-3 edge. It marked the 2,468th career point for the senior, breaking the 20-year mark of 2,467 held by Patty Stoffey of Loyola University Maryland.
Overall, Martinez scored 13 points in the game and knocked down a trio of three-pointers, becoming the first player in league history to connect on 300 career trifectas. With 2,478 points, Martinez is now 61st on the Division I all-time scoring ledger.
Junior forward Joy Adams registered 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Fellow junior Aaliyah Robinson was also in double figures with 13 points.
With the game tied 7-7 three minutes into the contest, the Gaels reeled off eight straight points to open up a 15-7 lead. The Red Foxes countered with a 10-2 run of their own to knot the score at 17.
Junior forward Karynda DuPree knocked down a layup with 10:07 remaining in the first half to give the Maroon & Gold the lead.
Iona's advantage got expanded to six on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Marina Lizarazu with 2:53 remaining in the opening half.
Iona led for over 31 minutes in the contest. The Gaels held a 31-26 advantage at halftime.
After Marist narrowed the deficit to one, 33-32, with 17:11 left in the game, Iona scored 11 of the next 13 points to extend the lead back to eight with 13:45 left.
Marist scored the next two baskets before Martinez buried her third three-pointer of the game pushed the Iona lead to seven, 45-38, with 10:48 remaining in the contest.
From there, the Red Foxes ended the game on a 21-9 run. The Red Foxes knotted the game at 54 with 1:48 remaining, marking the first time since the 10:07 mark in the first half that the Gaels did not hold the lead.
Marist scored the last five points of the game behind junior Sydney Coffey's three with 1:08 left and senior Tori Jarosz's layup with 26 seconds remaining.
Jarosz compiled a game-high 18 points. Junior Madeline Blais connected on four three-pointers to finish with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Red Foxes connected on 37.7 percent of their shots. The Gaels knocked down 32.3 percent of their attempts from the field.
The Maroon & Gold outrebounded Marist 42-38, including 14 on the offensive end.
With the loss, the Gaels dropped to 11-6 in MAAC play and 14-12 overall. Iona's next game is slated for Sunday against Quinnipiac at 2:00 pm.
