Iona Men's Soccer Falls To Siena On Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Following a pregame program honoring nine students as part of senior day on Saturday afternoon, the Maroon & Gold fell to MAAC rival Siena, 3-0.  The Gaels outshot the Saints 19-11, but only managed five shots on goal compared to nine for Siena.

Iona had the first two shots on goal in the first half with sophomore Killian Colombie and junior Marcos Nunez forcing Siena's junior goalie Aleksa Rodosavljevic to make a pair of early saves.

The Saints countered off an Iona attack in the 32nd minute, and the reverb put the Maroon & Gold on the defensive.  Senior net-minder Julian Petrello attempted to clear the ball out of danger, but his boot deflected of freshman Connor McGlynn and into goal, giving Siena a 1-0 lead that it'd carry into halftime.

Sophomore Daniel Huertas had a chance to knot the game at one in the 57th minute, but his rising shot deflected off the crossbar.  The Gaels continued to apply the pressure with shots from junior Luis Mendoza and senior Teddy Forson, but a Saint free-kick goal by sophomore J.C. Obregon in the 80th minute made the deficient 2-0.

Siena scored its third goal just forty seconds later on a penalty kick taken by junior Milorad Sobot.

Prior to the game, head coach James Hamilton and Associate Athletic Director Matt Glovaski honored nine members of the 2016 program who were all playing their final game at Mazzella Field on Saturday: Neekoli Calderon, Jonathan Proctor, Marley McClain, Oscar Gonzalez, Jon-Luke Ferrandino, Petrello, Nunez, Scarlett, and Forson.

The loss drops Iona to 4-5-0 in conference play, placing heavy value in the season finale on Wednesday evening at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY.
