NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Sophomore sharpshooter Alexis Lewis tied an Iona women's basketball single-game record with seven made three-point field goals Saturday afternoon. Her efforts helped the Gaels improve to 6-4 on the season with a 62-46 win against neighborhood for St. Francis Brooklyn.
Lewis finished the game with 25 points, one shy of her career-high that came earlier this season against Manhattan (12/6). She shot 7-for-10 from long range, and managed to corral four rebounds and swipe four steals in just 23 minutes. The last time a player made seven triples was in last season's NCAA Tournament contest when junior Philecia Atkins-Gilmore put on a show against the No. 2 seeded Maryland Terrapins.
For the third time this season, Iona kept an opponent to just 46 points. The Terriers made just 14 field goals on just 28.0% shooting, both Gael opponent-lows this season. St. Francis Brooklyn came into the game averaging nearly six made three-pointers per game, but the Maroon & Gold limited them to just 1-for-11 shooting.
Iona forced 23 turnovers, converting the extra possessions into 21 points. The Maroon & Gold netted 24 points in the paint, let largely by senior Karynda DuPree's 10 points. Sophomore Treyanna Clay and freshman Tori Lesko combined for nine points, eight rebounds, four steals, and four assists.
The Gaels assisted on 19 of its 25 made field goals. Senior Marina Lizarazu dished out a season-high eight assists and scored four points. She collected four steals and two rebounds. Coming into the game ranking top-10 in the nation and atop the MAAC in minutes per game, Lizarazu played just 25 minutes in today's contest.
Junior Kristen Mahoney scored her first points of the season and rebounded a personal best five boards in a season-high 23 minutes. Atkins-Gilmore scored a season-best five points. Freshman Amelia Motz recorded a career-best four assists and fellow rookie Tilasha Okey-Williams finished with seven points.
Iona led the game from start to finish, with its margin growing to as large as 27 points midway through the third.
The Maroon & Gold conclude their non-conference schedule Tuesday afternoon at Penn State. Tip-off from State College, PA is scheduled for 12 PM.
