Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY – A three-pointer plus an 'and-one' free throw from Deyshonee Much helped break a 63-63 tie and help the Iona College men's basketball team upend Saint Peter's 69-66 in overtime this afternoon inside the Hynes Center during MAAC action.
After the Peacocks (12-10, 8-4 MAAC) jumped out to a 3-point lead in the extra session, Jordan Washington put together four straight points to help the Gaels (15-8, 8-4 MAAC) jump ahead. Following a free throw from Trevis Wyche to tie the game for Saint Peter's, Jon Severe found Much on the left wing for the free throw and the foul.
With Much converting the free throw to give the Maroon & Gold a four-point advantage, Nick Griffin cut the Saint Peter's deficit to one points with a trey. Two free throws from Rickey McGill push the Iona lead back up to three points, and two missed attempts from beyond the arc for the Peacocks aided the Gaels' 69-66 victory to move to 1-1 in overtime this season.
Saint Peter's forced the overtime period as Quadir Welton tipped in a missed layup from Wyche with 24 seconds left in regulation. The equalizer marked the eighth tie of the game as neither team grew a lead larger than seven points throughout the 50 minutes of action. In total, the game was tie for seven minutes of play.
Sam Cassell Jr. led four players in double-figures for the Gaels with 17 points in 42 minutes to go along with five assists while shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Much and Washington combined for 28 points off the bench while Severe reached 11 points and seven rebounds.
Iona erased a four-point halftime deficit with a 31-27 second half advantage that included six of 13 made 3-pointers. Washington totaled nine of his points in the second period while Severe added eight points and four rebounds.
The Maroon & Gold finished with 19 assists one 24 made field goals, offsetting 22 points off 19 turnovers for Saint Peter's. McGill joined Cassell with the team-high of five assists.
Looking ahead, the Gaels return to action with a road trip to Lawrenceville, NJ to face Rider at 7:00 pm on Friday. The game is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.
