WORCESTER, MA - The Iona College men's and women's swimming & diving teams kicked off their 2017-18 season on the road on Friday facing off against Holy Cross at its home, the Hart Center Pool.
The meet started off strong for the Gaels with four straight wins, but the Crusaders began to swing the momentum by taking the women's 200-yard Free. At the end of the night, the Holy Cross women earned a come-from-behind over the Maroon & Gold, 166-123. The Iona men maintained its early momentum and grabbed a 175.5 to 120.5 win.
The meet started with the Iona quartet of junior Jessica Schmidt, freshman Kate DiRaimo, Alexandra DiBiase and sophomore Alyssa Chain winning the 200-Medley Relay at 1:53.75. The Iona men's team of junior Matthew Bosse, seniors Christopher Vadala and Zack Holbrook, freshman Conor Mullin backed it up with a win at 1:38.60.
The 1000-Freestyle saw freshmen Adrienne Bilello win her first career race at 10:54.80 as Anderson took the men's race at 9:52.48.
Chain returned to pick up wins in the 50-Freestyle at 24.79 and in the 100-Butterfly at 59.97. Diraimo picked up her first career win in the 200-Breaststroke at 2:31.96.
Senior Christian Foti posted wins in the 200-Freestyle at 1:44.74 and 500-Freestyle at 4:49.80. Mullin took the 100-Butterfly and 200-Butterfly with respective times of 52.58 and 1:58.75.
Holbrook won the 50-Freestyle at 22.39 with freshmen Spencer Moran grabbed the 200-Backstroke at 1:56.74.
The Gaels get right back into action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as they travel to New Haven, CT and face off against the Southern Connecticut State University Owls at 1:00 PM.
