Iona Loses Monday Matinee Versus Toledo

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team dropped a Monday matinee against the University of Toledo at the Hynes Athletics Center, 74-57.

Junior Treyanna Clay collected her first collegiate double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Sophomore Tilasha Okey-Williams netted a career-high 10 points off the bench, and fellow sophomore Amelia Motz netted double figures for the second consecutive game.

Toledo made six of their last seven shots in the first and led Iona 27-12.  Overall the Rockets shot 11-for-15 in the opening frame with juniors Mikaela Boyd and Kaayla McIntyre both shooting 3-of-3 for a combined 12 points.

Iona's defense ramped up in the opening minutes of the second quarter.  The Rockets didn't make a field goal for over four minutes and the Maroon & Gold cut the deficit to seven with 4:51 remaining.  Rookie Toyosi Abiola continued the momentum with an old fashioned three-point play that made the score 29-25 with just over three minutes to go before the break.

The Rockets held onto a 33-30 lead at the intermission.  Iona forced seven Toledo turnovers in the second quarter and held them to just seven field goal attempts.  The three-point line was unkind to the Maroon & Gold with the Gaels missed all nine attempts in the first half.  Toledo hit four triples in the first half, two from sophomore Sara Rokkaen.

The Gaels remained scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half until Okey-Williams dropped home their first three-pointer.  Abiola plunged the Maroon & Gold's second trifecta to make the score 40-36 come the media timeout in the third.  The Rockets didn't make a field goal over the final 3:29 of the third but still managed to lead the Maroon & Gold 49-42 as the fourth quarter commenced.

Sparked by junior Sara St-Ford's three-point play, Toledo began the final frame on a 10-0 run.  The deficit grew as large as 17 at 59-42 before Okey-Williams netted four straight points.   The Rockets made six of their final seven shots on way to the 74-57 final.

Boyd finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets.  McIntyre and senior Jada Woody each netted 10 points.  Sophomore Mariella Santucci dished out a game-high five assists.

Toledo shot 54.2% from the floor and 54.5% from beyond the arc.  Iona shot 42% overall and 16.7% from long range.

Freshman Jayden Eggleston made her first collegiate start and collected one rebound in nine minutes.  Senior Kristin Mahoney made her season-debut coming back from injury; she played six minutes and had one assist.

This is the Maroon & Gold's first 0-5 start to the season since 2004-05 under Tony Bozzella in his second year.

Iona continues its three-game home swing on Sunday, Dec. 3 against Bucknell.

Tip-off at the Hynes Center scheduled for 1 p.m.  The game is being broadcasted on WATCHESPN and ESPN3.
