ATHENS, OH – A perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line proved to be crucial for the Iona College men's basketball team during a 93-88 victory at Ohio University this evening during non-conference action.
TK Edogi led the Gaels (2-4) with an 8-for-8 performance at the charity stripe towards 20 points, all in the second half, and 12 rebounds to mark his second double-double of the season.
E.J. Crawford matched the scoring output with 20 points, tying a career-high set against Quinnipiac last January 23 while shooting 8-of-11 from the field.
Rickey McGill added 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds while
Zach Lewis was the other of four Gaels in double-figures with 16 points.
The host Bobcats (3-3) also put four players in double-figures with Mike Laster notching a game-high of 23 points to go along with four rebounds. Teyvion Kirk posted a stat line of 14 points, five assists and four rebounds while Gavin Block and Jordan Dartis added 18 and 15 points respectively.
After Ohio tied the score at 83 with 2:45 remaining following a 3-pointer from Block, Edogi put the Maroon & Gold ahead for good with a pair of free throws. Lewis converted the final two free throws with one second remaining to give Iona the non-conference road win.
In addition to a perfect performance from the free throw line, Iona also put forth 14 made 3-point field goals to follow up on 16 made during the last contest against Coastal Carolina. The long distance shooting helped turn a 12-point deficit in the first half into an 11-point advantage in the second half.
The Maroon & Gold put forth 10 made 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to close in on the Bobcats, ending the period tied at 42 following a brief lead. Lewis scored 12 points in the first half on four 3-pointers while Crawford and
Jan Svandrlik each added two makes from deep.
Crawford evenly split his 20 points between the two halves while Edogi helped lead the charge in the final half with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds following just two boards in the first. McGill added 12 of his points in 18 second half minutes.
Iona finished with a 40-35 rebounding advantage and outscored Ohio 37-14 in bench points that included Edogi's 20. The Bobcats outshot the Gaels behind a 50.8 shooting percentage (33-for-65) that included 13 made 3-pointers in the effort. Block led Ohio with five makes.
Tonight marked the first 90-point effort of the season and first since a 95-88 win against Marist on February 17, 2017.
After starting the season with six games away from New Rochelle, Iona opens the home portion of the 2017-18 schedule by welcoming Fairleigh Dickinson this Saturday at 1:00 pm from the Hynes Center.
