NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Junior Alexis Lewis recorded her fourth double-double of the season in Iona women's basketball's 63-46 loss at Stony Brook. The Seawolves scored 26 points off turnovers and held the Maroon & Gold to 9-for-27 shooting in the second half. Stony Brook broke a four-game losing streak with Thursday evening's win.
Lewis finished the game with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. She tied a season-high with four steals.
Freshman Toyosi Abiola scored all seven of her points in the opening 5:24 of the game. The Gaels lead for the majority of the first quarter until Stony Brook began capitalizing on turnovers; the Seawolves scored 10 points off eight Maroon & Gold turnovers in the first period. Stony Brook ended the opening frame on an 8-0 run and led at the end of one, 18-12.
Rookie Amelia Motz netted two baskets to open the second and Iona retook the lead 23-22 with 5:18 remaining in the first half. The Seawolves immediately answered with its second 8-0 run of the game. They eventually capped off the first half with a three-point buzzer beater from sophomore Gio Perez, leading to a 33-27 halftime deficit for the Maroon & Gold.
Junior Treyanna Clay reached double-figures for the fourth time this season with seven points in the third quarter. Despite her effort, Stony Brook pulled away when junior Shania Johnson hit three trifectas to put the Gaels down, 51-36.
The fourth quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams combining to shoot 33% and commit 11 turnovers.
Clay had Iona's lone two free throw attempts of the game. Stony Brook shot 14 from the charity stripe, making seven.
Johnson and Perez had five and four assists respectfully to facilitate the Stony Brook attack. Johnson had 15 points and junior Jerell Matthew tallied 13 points.
Freshman Rebekah Justice set a new career-high with six rebounds in a career-high 15 minutes coming off the bench. Motz and Lewis each collected three assists.
With today's win, Stony Brook pulls ahead in the all-time season series, 6-5. The Seawolves and Gaels have split their last six meetings.
Iona returns to action against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off between the Gaels and Terriers set for 1 p.m.
