NIAGARA FALLS, NY - The Iona College baseball program continued its run at the MAAC Baseball Championship at Sal Maglie Stadium this afternoon by knocking off top seeded Fairfield 7-5 to advance to the final round against Marist this afternoon for a 4:20 pm first pitch.
The Gaels (25-25) last played in the MAAC Championship Final in 1997, falling for the second straight year to Siena.Â
During today's 7-5 against Fairfield, Jared Finkel increased his program record single season save mark to 11 by logging the final 3.0 innings of work. The outing was not effortless as the Stags nearly claimed a walk-off victory as Mike Crispino sent the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the ninth to right field in front of the fence with Seth Hoagland waiting.Â
Sean Breen led the team with three hits while also scoring twice. Antonio Velardi earned his first win of the season with 2.1 innings of work, allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out one. Lou Matarazzo and Sean Scales each recorded two RBI.
The Gaels and Red Foxes are scheduled for a 4:20 pm first pitch in the first game of the MAAC Championship Final. With an Iona victory, the two programs will play for a winner-take-all final game tomorrow at noon.Â
