Iona Men's Soccer Suffers Heartbreak Vs. Manhattan, 1-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game and home-opening match, the Iona College men's soccer game fell in double-overtime to its crosstown rival, 1-0.  Manhattan garnered its first road win since 2014 with junior Ryan Shields burying the game-winner in the 101st minute.

The game-ending sequence began with Iona junior goalie Kellar Sirstins punching out an attempted cross into the box.  His effort to clear the ball found the foot of Shields, and the junior midfielder was able to bury it into the back of the net for Manhattan's fourth win of the season.  With the defeat, the Gaels drop to an overall 1-3-2 record on the season.

Iona outshot Manhattan 11 to 8 in the game, and each team had managed just two shots on goal during regulation.  Senior Matias Correa and junior Aristotle Seferlis had the Maroon & Gold's two shots on goal.  Senior Luis Mendoza had a team-high total of three shots.

Rookie Brandon Joseph-Buadi had a team-high three shots and two shots on goal for Manhattan.  Shields, and four other Manhattan players, all finished the game with one shot.  Junior Callum Carsley had the most dangerous chance of the game in the first half with a free kick opportunity from 20 yards out that hit the cross bar.

The Gaels will look to get back in the win column this Saturday when they travel to take on the Siena Saints in Loudonville, NY.
