NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In a game that featured 12 lead changes, Monmouth held Iona to just five fourth quarter points as part of a 62-56 come-from-behind win. The Gaels made just one of their final 14 field goal attempts as the Hawks closed out the game knocking down five of their last seven shots.
Six-time MAAC Rookie of the Week Toyosi Abiola played the full forty minutes and set career-marks with seven rebounds and three assists in addition to 17 points. Junior Treyanna Clay scored 18 points on 8-for-15 shooting and had eight rebounds, six of which were offensive.
Junior Alexis Lewis led the Maroon & Gold in defeat with 19 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. She shot 7-for-20 from the floor and hit five three-pointers as part of her sixth double-double of the season.
Abiola, Clay and Lewis combined for 54 of Iona's 56 points. The lone two points not scored by the trio were netted by rookie Adrienne DiGioia in the opening minute of the game. Outside the tripod there were only nine field goal attempts; senior Kristin Mahoney and juniors Amelia Motz and Tilasha Okey-Williams combined to miss six shots while DiGioia went 1-for-3 in her first start since Dec. 3.
Monmouth was led by junior McKinzee Barker with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She made her first three long-range attempts and finished the game with a career-best four trifectas. Prior to this afternoon's game, she had made just three three-point field goals throughout the season.
Senior Rhaiah Spooner-Knight had 13 points on a team-high 16 field goal attempts in addition to a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Rosa Graham came off the bench and supplied 10 points.
Iona out-rebounded its MAAC-leading rebounding opponent, 42-29. Abiola and Clay combined for 12 of the Gaels' season-high 19 offensive rebounds. The Maroon & Gold could not force the Hawks into miscues; Monmouth entered the game averaging nearly 22 turnovers per game but committed just 12 in route to its win.
The win is the Hawks' second straight conference win. Iona still holds the all-time series lead over Monmouth, 9-7.
The Maroon & Gold's next game is on the road in Riverdale, NY against the Manhattan Jaspers on Thursday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is at 7 PM.
