NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball program fell at home in the Hynes Center on Saturday afternoon to the Siena Saints, 70-48. Junior Alexis Lewis netted a team-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season in the loss.
Prior to the game, Lewis was honored by head coach Billi Chambers and Deputy Director of Athletics Matt Glovaski for surpassing the 1,000 point plateau. Following Saturday's game, the Pittston, PA native has 1,062 points which ranks 23rd all-time in program history.
Siena's star senior guard Kollyns Scarbrough scored a team-high 23 points in just 23 minutes on 10-of-15 shooting. The Saints were aided off the bench by sophomore Sabrina Piper who dropped home 12, and freshman Marilena Gerostergiou's career-best 11.
Iona's offense struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 2-for-18; both three-pointers were made by Lewis in the second half. With her two triples, she now is tied for fifth all-time in program history with 159 career three-point field goals.
The Saints found success in the paint, doubling up Iona in terms of points between the blocks, 44-22. The Maroon & Gold outrebounded Siena by three but lost the turnover battle by six; the Saints had 25 points off Iona's 19 turnovers.
Junior Treyanna Clay had 12 points for her third straight double-digit scoring game. She also contributed a game-best six assists. Freshman Jayden Eggleston scored seven points and distributed a new personal-best five helpers.
Siena shot 49% from the floor and 27% from long range. The tenth ranked free throw shooting team also made 12-of-13 from the charity stripe while the Gaels made just two of five.
Iona's next game is against Monmouth on Monday evening. The Gaels are set to tip off and complete the season-series against the Hawks at 7 PM. The contest is being broadcasted live on WATCHESPN and ESPN3.
