NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Rider used a 43-13 scoring discrepancy in the second and third quarter to catapult its way to a 62-49 win over the Maroon & Gold at the Hynes Center. Iona had one turnover combined in the first and fourth quarters, but committed 16 in the middle portion of the contest, resulting in 19 points for the Broncs.
Junior Alexis Lewis netted a team-high 15 points on 6-for-16 shooting. She hit 3-of-9 from beyond the arc while also collecting five boards in 35 minutes of action. Freshman Toyosi Abiola scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half. The seven-time MAAC Rookie of the Week played 39 minutes and shot 6-for-15. Junior Treyanna Clay collected 10 points and five rebounds.
Rider had three-players in double-figures with sophomore Stella Johnson leading the way on her 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting. She fell just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and had a team-best five assists. Senior Kamila Hoskova had 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Rookie Jaiden Morris came off the bench to tally 13 points in 19 minutes.
The Maroon & Gold began the game scoring 16 of their first quarter 18 points in the paint. The Gaels had just two points between the blocks in the second and third quarter before ending the game with 30.
Iona scored six points in the second quarter on just two three-point field goals from Lewis and Abiola. Rider had a 9-0 stretch in the second frame and a 10-0 run in the third to catalyze itself to an above .500 mark in conference play.
Tonight's loss against Rider marked the 20th straight defeatfor the Gaels, matching the longest streak in program history which was previously set in 2002-03 under former head coach Anthony Bozzella in his first season.
Iona's next game is on Sunday, Jan. 28 against the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Tip-off from the Hynes Athletics Center is set for 1 PM. The game can be streamed live on WATCHESPN & ESPN3.
Prior to the versus Saint Peter's on Sunday, the Athletics Department along with the Women's Leadership Society will host a Girls And Women In Sports Day Clinic.
