NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Manhattan defeated Iona in the penultimate home contest of the season, 57-48. The Jaspers held the Gaels to 29.2% shooting in the second half while closing out the contest hitting 57.1% in the fourth quarter.
Prior to the game, head coach Bill Chambers and the Iona College athletics staff honored senior guard Kristin Mahoney and team manager Amanda McClintock as part of the program's annual senior day ceremony.
Junior Alexis Lewis led the Gaels with her 12th double-double of the season. She finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds while also cataloging a career-best four blocks. Rookie Toyosi Abiola had 14 points with three made field goals and six made free throws.
Manhattan's senior guard Amani Tatum scored a team-best 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The MAAC's leading assist-giver dished out four helpers and had two steals. Senior Kayla Grimme dealt with foul trouble but still managed 10 rebounds and seven points.
Each team came out with a sweltering pace in the first quarter. Iona hit its only three three-point field goals in the opening frame while the Jaspers scored 10 of their first 16 points in the paint.  Manhattan continued to dominate between the blocks until intermission where it held a 28-24 lead. The Jaspers had nine points off turnovers and nine second chance points in the first half.
The second half began with upgraded defensive efforts by both Iona and Manhattan. They combined for 12 turnovers in the third quarter but neither team scored any points off the extra possessions. The Jaspers picked up the pace in the fourth and fended off the Gaels with 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. in the final frame. They made 9-of-14 from the charity stripe to secure their road MAAC win of the season.
Mahoney played 25 minutes and had four rebounds and two assists. In her second straight start, sophomore Amelia Motz had six points, six rebounds, and a team-best four assists. Rookie Jayden Eggleston had four points, one rebounds and three rebounds.
Iona's home-finale is Tuesday evening against the Marist Red Foxes. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM. The game is the Maroon & Gold's annual breast cancer awareness game.
