PHILADELPHIA, PA – A strong second half run by Drexel was too much for the Gaels to overcome, as Iona fell to the host 14-9 on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Gabriella Di Domizio tied the all-time program record in caused turnovers, picking up the 78
th of her career. The senior standout already sits atop the program leaderboard in caused turnovers-per-game, averaging 1.44 and now sits tied with
Jaclyn O'Leary in total caused turnovers.
Pamela Giordano cracked the top-10 in program history in goals, scoring a game-high five on seven shots.
Jenna Tolzmann tallied a pair of goals and recorded three draw controls.
Danielle Keenan and Katelyn Becker each scored once. On the defensive end,
Alyssa Connell caused two turnovers and grabbed three ground balls.
In net,
Shannon McCaffrey made nine saves and grabbed four ground balls.
As a team, the Gaels controlled only eight out of 25 draw controls and turned the ball over 11 times. Iona totaled 20 shots, with 12 on goal.
Drexel started out hot out of the opening whistle, scoring the first two goals of the game within the first minute. Tolzmann answered a minute and a half later and was followed by Giordano's first of the game off of a free position shot. The lead did not last long, as the host regained the lead one minute later.
With just under 23 minutes remaining in the first half, Giordano connected with her second tally. Five minutes later the Dragons capitalized on a free position to take the lead, but Becker knotted the score on the man-up advantage to tie the game at 4-4. Iona conceded the final three goals of the frame over the final nine minutes of the first half as the Gaels went into the break down 7-4.
Giordano took over in the first four minutes of the second half, scoring two goals within 1:20 of each other to cut the Gaels deficit to one, 7-6.
Catherine Gallery was inches away from tying the score but rang it off the post with 25 minutes left to play. McCaffrey made a save two minutes later but Drexel was able to cash in with 20:19 remaining to take a two-goal lead.
The Dragons began to pull away later in the second half, scoring the next three goals over a five-minute span to bring the Iona deficit to 11-6 with 10:58 to play. Giordano stopped the Dragons' run with her final tally off of a free-position shot. The Drexel offense continued to roll after that, scoring the next three to open a 14-7 advantage. Tolzmann and Keenan connected with goals over the final two minutes.
The Gaels return to Mazzella Field on Wednesday at 3:00 PM in a rematch of last year's contest which saw
Katelyn Noschese tally the overtime winner in Fairfield.
