Iona Baseball Falls To Stony Brook 5-3 In Weekend Opener At Norfolk

The Seawolves scored a pair of runs in the sixth to secure the win.

NORFOLK, VA – Opening a three-game weekend trip at Norfolk State University, the Iona College baseball fell to Stony Brook this evening by a final score of 5-3 in a non-conference tilt.

The Gaels (0-4) opened the scoring in the first half inning as Fran Kinsey led off with a double down the left field line. Two groundouts later, the junior scored the first run with the RBI going to Sean Scales.

After a pair of scoreless half innings, the Seawolves (4-1) took control of the lead with a couple of runs in the bottom of the second. Similar to Kinsey, Brandon Alamo led off the inning with double. A fielding error allowed Alamo to tie the score in the next at-bat before a ground out allowed Cristian Mortes to score the go-ahead run after he reached on the error.

Brandon Janofsky scored in the next offensive inning for Stony Brook following a pair of Iona errors to increase the margin to 3-1. In the top of the fourth, Lou Matarazzo brought the deficit to 3-2 with RBI single to score Sean Breen. Three batters later, Seth Hoagland tied the score with a single of his own to plate Sean Scales.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, Stony Brook scored the final two runs of the night on one swing as Sean Buckhout laced a single to left field to score a pair.

Breen finished with a team-best two hits for the Maroon & Gold. Dan McBryan and Henry Conroy each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, with McBryan striking out two and Conroy producing three straight groundouts in the eighth.

The second of the three-game weekend is slated for noon on Saturday between the Gaels and Norfolk State.
