DAVIDSON, NC – Trailing by five goals with 11:35 remaining in regulation, the Iona College Lacrosse program stormed back was unable to erase the deficit, falling to the Wildcats 10-8 on Wednesday night.
Jenna Tolzmann and
Pamela Giordano tied for the team lead in goals with two, and were followed by
Libby Miller,
Kaitlyn Becker,
Christine Gironda and
Katelyn Noschese who each tallied one goal apiece.
In net,
Shannon McCaffrey stopped nine shots and grabbed eight ground balls.
The Maroon and Gold outshot the Wildcats 25-24 and turned the ball over 17 times compared to Davidson's 15.
Just under three minutes into the first half, Miller scored the game's first goal, assisted by
Emma Hager. The Wildcats scored the next three over the next five minutes before Giordano found Tolzmann to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. The Gaels were held off the scoresheet for the remaining 14:10 of the half and conceded three goals, trailing the Wildcats 6-2 after 30 minutes.
Gironda opened the second half scoring with her third of the season, but Davidson answered back with two goals over the next eight minutes to bring the score to 8-3 in favor of the wildcats.
With 19:14 remaining in the game, Giordano connected on her 21
st tally of the season a free position attempt and was followed by Becker's goal three minutes later. With 12:04 to go, Davidson scored two goals in 29 seconds to open a commanding 10-5 advantage.
The Gaels began the comeback trail with 10:19 left when Tolzmann took advantage of a free position attempt. The Gaels regained control on the following draw control and Giordano cut the deficit to 10-7. Noschese later found the back of the net with 7:54 to go as the Gaels brought the score to within two, 10-8.
Over the final minutes, Noschese and Giordano and Gironda were unable to connect on shot attempts as the final horn sounded.
Iona returns to the field at Brown on Sunday to take on the Bears at 2:00 PM.
