RICHMOND, VA - VCU was able to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of ninth to earn a 2-1 win against the Iona College baseball team this afternoon in a game two of a three-game series in Richmond.
With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the final inning, Zac Ching drew a walk to score Daane Berezo with the winning run as the Rams (12-8) did not need a hit in the ninth to earn the victory. Berezo led off the inning with a walk before Mitchel Lacey was intentionally walked with one out. Brett Willett was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ching to work a walk in the next at-bat and push the winning run across.
Iona (4-11) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning as
Niko Switalla doubled with two outs and scored on the next at-bat as
Brian Picone singled to right center. VCU eventually found the tying run in the bottom of the fifth as Ching led off the frame with a homerun to left field.Â
Picone led the Maroon & Gold with two hits to go along with a RBI. Five different Rams made up the five hits for VCU in the contest. On the mound,
Joe DeRosa tossed 7.2 innings of work in the start with three strikeouts. Sean Thompson logged seven innings in a start for the Rams with nine strikeouts before handing the ball over to Benjamin Dum for the final two frames as Dum earned his first victory of the season behind one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
