Sixth Inning Rally Pushes Iona Baseball Past Siena 4-2

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team used a two-run sixth inning towards a 4-2 win against Siena this afternoon in the third game of a three-game MAAC series this afternoon at City Park.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom fo the sixth, Stephen Furman provided the go-ahead RBI hit with a two-run single to score Dion Austrie and Niko Switalla. Switalla was the first base runner of the inning following a one-out walk before Austrie reached in the next at-bat on an infield error by Siena (2-18, 2-1 MAAC). Two batters later, Furman punched a ball to shallow right center with two outs to score his teammates and put Iona (5-15, 1-2 MAAC) ahead for good.

Controlling a 3-2 lead, Mario Ferraioli retired the Saints in order in the seventh before Fran Kinsey provided some defensive help in the eighth. The junior chased down a deep fly ball by Joe Drpich to produce the first out of the frame in addition to ending the inning with a diving play in the left-center field gap to strand Brian Kelly at second base and keep the Maroon & Gold ahead.

Austrie scored his second run of the game towards some insurance in the bottom of the eighth starting with a leadoff walk. The infielder advanced to third during Derek Becker's at-bat on a failed pickoff attempt at first that ended up in the Siena bullpen. With Becker still at the plate, Austrie took advantage of a wild pitch to give Iona a 4-2 margin.

Following 3.1 innings of work from Ferraioli, Vinny Martin came on for the save in the ninth. Behind 17 pitches and two strikeouts, the graduate student closed the door for Iona on the 4-2 victory with Tyler Bruno picking up the groundout on the final play of the contest.

Ferraioli earned his victory of the season by striking out three strikeouts while Martin notched his first save of the season. Patrick Ryan opened the game for the Maroon & Gold by logging 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Kyle Ackly threw two pitches to one batter to record his only out of the game and transition from Ryan to Ferraioli in the fifth.

Furman led the team with two RBI behind his one hit in addition to a walk and a stolen base. Lou Matarazzo drew three walks on the afternoon to help produced a run scored while Austrie led the team with two runs to go with a walk. Jordan Bishop and Phil Madonna each tallied a pair of hits for the visiting Saints.

With Wednesday's non-conference tilt against Albany postponed, the Gaels are next in action this Friday with a trip to Lawrenceville, NJ to face Rider to start a three-game series at 3 pm.
