Iona Baseball Upends Rutgers 12-3 On Tuesday Afternoon

The Gaels earned the win in eight innings with the game being called due to darkness.

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Iona College baseball team scored multiple runs in three different innings to claim a 12-3 midweek victory against non-conference foe Rutgers on the road this afternoon. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Rutgers (5-6) claimed an initial 1-0 advantage with a run in the first inning before the Gaels (3-7) responded with three in the third inning. Stephen Furman led off with a single followed by a Fran Kinsey double to put runners on second and third that allowed Furman to score the tying run two batters later on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks led to a bases loaded opportunity from Brian Picone who came through with a two RBI single to give Iona a 3-1 margin.

After the Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, a five-run fifth helped give the Gaels a comfortable lead. The Maroon & Gold loaded the bases again in the frame as Seth Hoagland took advantage at first with a RBI single before Tyler Bruno cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. Bruno scored with one out on a Kinsey sacrifice fly to go into the middle of the fifth with an 8-2 advantage.

Iona answered once again to Rutgers scoring a run in the seventh with another four runs in the eighth. Sean Scales joined the offensive attack by notching an infield RBI single before Picone added a RBI single and Hoagland drove in a pair on a double to left field.

Hoagland ended the afternoon with a team-best three hits, including a double, towards three RBI and a run scored. Picone and Bruno also recorded three RBI while Picone was one of four individuals to score two runs. On the mound, Patrick Ryan earned the win with 4.0 innings of relief work with just one run surrendered. Stephen Hansen started the first two innings with a strikeout while Henry Conry finished the final two frames that included a pair of strikeouts.

The Gaels begin a three-game series this Friday at Longwood with a 4 pm first pitch in Farmville, VA.
